Back Again on the Harbor!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Candido Barros and this is my 3rd year with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay. I'm taking on a new role as a Lead Harbor Explorer, and I would like to tell you a little bit about myself.

I have lived in Jamaica Plain for the past few years. I first discovered that I enjoyed fishing when I would go to Jamaica Pond every other weekend. I studied carpentry in Madison Park High School in the use of basic carpentry hand tools, hand-held power tools, and design to complete projects such as building a picture frame, coat rack, and picnic table. In the fall, I will be continuing a vocation in carpentry and will be using the skills I learned in high school.

I'm looking forward to this summer and hope everyone has a great learning experience!

See You Soon,

Candido

New Start for the Summer

Hello,

My name is Edward Calderon Casimil, and I am a seventeen year old Hispanic. I was born in Puerto Rico, and I moved to the United States when I was two years old. Now, I live in Mission Hill right near the Ruggles T Station. I am in the eleventh grade.

I attend Madison Park High, a technical vocational school. It is a school with eighteen different vocational classes that you can choose from like electricity and plumbing.

I am excited to be working with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay this summer, because I want to gain new working skills that I haven't learned yet. Since I am working for Save the Harbor/Save the Bay can open new doors in the future. I will be able to meet new people during the summer, and visit places that I haven't gone to.

Something new that I am excited about is experiencing different outdoors and indoors activities. I am also excited to meet new people and work with others. I also want to learn more Save the Harbor.

Until Next Time,

Edward

An Eventful Day

Today at the Boston Children's Museum, it was an eventful and exciting day.

We started the day normally: taking our supplies from the utility closet, cutting up bait, throwing in the crab trap, and setting up the fishing rods. Maybe it had something to do with the type of bait we used.

In the morning, Bruce brought us a bucket of fresh quahogs for the day. We usually use herring or bass for bait. Within the first hour, we caught not just one spider crab but two!

Also, we have been chumming the waters with white bread and a few saltine crackers. Candido, our Lead Harbor Explorer, and I spotted a few striped bass close to the underpass. We often see the stripers after our lunch break at about 2 pm.

While we try to catch the stripers, we like to talk to the kids and family we see about what they find in the channel each and every day. Many kids and even parents are surprised to see how many different types of creatures swim below them.

It was a fun day filled with sun, laughter, and teachable moments. I am hoping for many more days like this one at the museum.

See you on the pier,

KARRISHA IS BACK FOR ANOTHER SUMMER!!!!

Hey awesome Save the Harbor / Save the Bay Blog Readers!

My name is Karrisha Gillespie, and I am an upcoming Junior at the Kents Hill School! I was born and raised right here in the great city of Boston. I absolutely love swimming, fishing, crabbing, and walking along our public beaches that our clean harbor has provided. More importantly, this is my THIRD consecutive summer with this amazing program.  Many people ask me, "What is so special about working for Save the Harbor Save the Bay?"  This question is always followed by: "What's not to like about spending the summer outside fishing, crabbing, finding sea glass, and sharing our beautiful harbor with Bostonians?"

I am so glad to be back and share this awesome experience with the All Access crew :)
Save the Harbor hosts various activities in and around Boston! We run 8 camp groups: All Access Boston Harbor, Children's Museum, Blacks Creek, Camp Harbor View, Courageous Sailing Center, Pier's Park, Harry McDonough Sailing Center, and Community Boating,  for young kids and teens to explore, observe, and use our harbor. Often times we can expect to see familiar faces, but are always excited to work with new kids! Everyday is a great day so come out and see what our harbor has to offer!

GOOD NEW NEWS!!!!!!!

Save the Harbor is stronger than ever due to our new underwater cameras!

Kiauna and I checking out the new underwater camera!

We are now able to supplement our explanations about life underneath the harbor with a visual that displays everything that is going on in that exact moment! The cameras are extremely easy to use and the screens are clear! My favorite thing that I saw was a small flounder swimming up to the camera as its head swished side to side!

Kiauna and I looking at 3 small fish and a sea star!
We are all excited about our new cameras and cannot wait to see how the kids will react to them! Stay tuned to find out!

Training week has been a pleasure! I enjoyed welcoming all of the new summer staff and seeing returning staff. We are all pumped, so I cannot wait to see what's in store for the rest of this summer!

Newest Little Sister / Friend

Hey guys , its Brianna again. This is my new friend Damari. On Friday August 3, 2012 , Damari and I had a bonding moment from sharing our daily lives with each other to learning about personalities. Damari is a young 10-year old , Cape Verdian. She is from the Hyde Park Community Center and told me things like she loves to dance , play volleyball , and soccer. She said she has tried multiple times to get a dance group going within her community center but not enough people wanted to join. When I told her about how I have been dancing since I was 6-years old she was ecstatic because she has the same passion as a 10-year old girl. She inspires me to keep my dance life alive just for little kids who have different talents and inspire to use them the right way. She also told me that she loves being on boats and near the water but isnt able to be on boats because her mother gets sea sick easily. So I took it upon myself to invite her with me and my moms friends to go fishing with us. She makes me so happy and excited for the things we could do outside of work of course with her parents permission. Well time to sign out i'll write back later in the week i'll keep you posted. Toodles !
