Miss Peddocks

Unfortunately this is not a blog about the boat Miss Peddocks, if you were anticipating that my apologies.

Ladies and Gents this is a blog about the wonderful, Peddocks Island.

Personally I have had an amazing time on Peddocks in previous years. I've met Governor Deval Patrick and have hosted thousands of children on our FREE All Access Boston Harbor experience.

Nice to meet again, Tobin Sports Club!
Being our first week out we have accomplished many things on Peddocks. We welcomed our favorite fisherman Sam Schrieber back, landed a few skate, and thrived in a heat wave. Sounds like a lot, right? Wrong. We pride ourselves in our work and once we accomplish one thing we do not like to settle, we dream bigger and work towards the bigger goal. Especially when were catching spider crabs on our rods that are almost a foot in diameter!

Peddocks' beach is also a favorite of many groups. On All Access we cycle islands first Spectacle, George's, Spectacle, then Peddocks. Already we have seen groups like Mission Safe, Revere Rec, and many others return this week for Peddocks. They all enjoy many parts of the island but love the beach the most. Despite being slightly smaller my belief is that they enjoy the slight current that flows through the beach. Or maybe the smooth rocks that can be skipped if the group cannot swim due to their organizations ruling. (We still advise everyone to atleast get their feet wet) Despite spectacle offering equal the amount of opportunity with a shorter commute, Peddocks is still a fan favorite.

Its been a great week, from BCM to AABH, from kickball to swimming, from smiles to excitement. This week could not have went any better.

Talk to you soon,

Ahmed Hassan

Fun and Best Monday

Monday is boring most of the time, but this Monday was fun at Courageous Sailing Center and a lot of kids were with us. I really enjoyed this Monday. Some kids were scared of the crab but most of them really enjoyed it. I was taking pictures of the kids and all the kids seemed to like the sea and fishing. I had the best Monday playing with the kids and seeing them happy with us. The kids were playing with jellyfish and they like them. I am scared of crabs the kids were very scared to touch the crab.

Monday was a sunny day at Courageous Sailing Center. We had a group of 18 students and we caught a lot of crabs. All of the kids were happy. We work last week at Courageous Sailing Center, but this week seems more fun. I like to have a lot of kids because it is more fun to hear a lot of different ideas from different people.  Some of the kids like the crab, but some of the kids did not like the crab.

Monday with MissionSAFE

This Monday at Courageous Sailing Center was one of the best times that we’ve had there this summer. About 20 new friends from MissionSAFE in Charlestown joined our team from Save the Harbor and the campers in extended day with Courageous.

The group from MissionSAFE ready to hit the dock

It was thrilling to share the creatures in our lobster traps with so many curious and enthusiastic young people. We saw green crabs, rock crabs, Asian shore crabs, and sea stars in our traps. Before the group from MissionSAFE arrived at Courageous we tried to catch some big fish to show them more of the cool things you can find in the harbor.

Sam, our resident artist and fishing expert, was with us and spotted two tautogs swimming close to the surface between the dock and the pier. We also spotted a really big striped bass lurking under the dock. Our team tried tirelessly to catch one of these huge fish, but we had seen them there before and they seemed too clever to take our bait. The tautogs were swimming in a male and female pair and probably had other things on their minds besides food.

Trying hard to catch the big tautogs or a striper

Even though we didn’t catch the big ones, we had a blast teaching the group from MissionSAFE about the crabs we caught and sea stars and jellies. For some of them, it was their first time trying to hold a crab with flailing claws and legs, touching the slime of a squelchy jellyfish, and feeling the tube feet of a sea star sucking on their fingers.

Comparing the difference between male and female green crabs

It’s a privilege to be able to bring these experiences to people and help them appreciate the harbor. Courageous Sailing Center is such a fun place to be, and it is an invaluable resource for the community. We had a great Monday at Courageous with our little sailors and new explorers from MissionSAFE.

See you on the dock,
