Need A Doctor At Spectacle.....

Need A Doctor At Spectacle!

Good afternoon everybody, last week on Thursday I got injured again because when I was splashing water at everyone I stepped on a shell. It was really painful when I stepped on it. I jump out of the water as  fast I could to see my toes but people thought there was something in the water but I said "Someone call a doc my toes is injured I got a shell hooked to me". I took a big huge breath and pulled the shell out of my toe as fast as possible. At the end of the day, I enjoy swimming at spectacle when is a sunny or rainy day. I'll still be in the water waiting for people to enjoy there self in the water on a sunny day. My best memories at Spectacle Island is being on the boat, kids and I playing quack a dilly o my. It's a game where everyone is around in a circle and everyones gotta put their hand on your partner beside you. A lot of kids like to play the game with me because I am the number one of the game I never get defeated by no one but there will be like 20 somethings kids that want to face me but I give every kid a chance to beat me.

The return of Kickball

Thursday was a remarkable do for the staff on All Access. First, we were blessed by being allowed to go out to Spectacle with our Lead Teacher Bridget Ryan. Second, all the children sang to her because it was her birthday. Finally, we had a little surprise celebration in the office in which we celebrated three milestone birthdays, Bridget, Mark, and Bruces!
David leading a Happy Birthday chant for Bridget with the help of a couple hundred kids!
The end of our week, everyone was so wet
With the return of few groups from last year, we had our first successful day of kickball! Despite losing at such a large deficit, we'll keep the score disclosed, the game was a blast! Who knew a game so simple could turn so competitive this quick? Most of the kids did not even want to go swimming afterwards and ended up playing Wiffle Ball with Andy. Oh, but they did go swimming.

I struck a deal with Bridget before entering the water. The only way I'd go in was if I got to dunk her in the water. Unfortunately this did not happen, but I still went swimming. I mean even the children wanted to see the birthday girl get thrown in, who would not? Everyone knows the rules of all access. If swimming is allowed, we go swimming. I mean if you don't your a scrub, and nobody wants to be a scrub.

With the troubles of rain in our first week of exploration, we accommodated each day appropriately and it was great to end such a great week with beautiful weather, and amazing children.

Swim and Paddle for Boston Harbor

On Saturday, August 3rd, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay will host The Swim And Paddle For Boston Harbor, a one-mile, championship chip-timed, professionally staffed, competitive swim followed by a chip-timed Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) competition.

Swimmers in last year’s Swim for Boston Harbor

The Swim And Paddle For Boston Harbor will take place at the BCYF Curley Recreation Center at M Street Beach in South Boston, which is among the cleanest urban beaches in America. Swimmers will follow course from the Curley Center in an equilateral triangle and return to the finish line at M Street beach.

Online registration at http://www.swim4bostonharbor.org is open until August 1st. Participants can also register on-site the morning of the competition on August 3rd from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Swim registration is $50, and the race will be capped at 100 participants.

The SUP competition registration is $25, and paddleboard rentals are available for an additional $25. Those wishing to join the party without competing in either event are asked to make a contribution of $25. Save the Harbor/Save the Bay hopes to raise $5,000 to continue our work to restore and protect Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay for all Bostonians and the region’s residents and visitors to enjoy.

Proceeds from the swim will benefit Save The Harbor/Save the Bay, while funds raised from the SUP competition will benefit both the Massachusetts Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and Save the Harbor/Save the Bay.

The top fundraiser will receive a round trip ticket from JetBlue Airways to any destination they fly from Logan Airport. Winners of each event will be entered into a raffle to win tickets from JetBlue Airways as well.  Everyone who donates and attends the party can enjoy a cold pint of Harpoon Beer from our friends at Harpoon Brewery and treats from our new partners at Tasty Burger after the competitions.

10 years ago, this event would not have been possible because the water in the Boston Harbor was often unsafe for swimming after even a small summer storm. Today we are proud to say that this event will take place rain or shine on one of the cleanest urban beaches in America, thanks to the hard work and commitment of thousands of people and the tenacious advocacy of Save the Harbor/Save the Bay.

Swim for Boston Harbor 2012

Greetings, everyone - Mike Murowchick here, Save the Harbor / Save the Bay policy intern and photographer-in-chief.

On Sunday, August 19, Save the Harbor / Save the Bay hosted the Swim for Boston Harbor, a championship chip-timed competitive swim on M Street Beach at the BCYF Curley Community Center in South Boston. This year, nearly 50 swimmers aged 9 - 64 took part the race, which raised almost $5,000 for Save the Harbor / Save the Bay.

Here are a few of the photos I took at the swim. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed taking them!  You can see more in Save the Harbor's swim album on PhotoBucket .

Katie Odair of Watertown, MA, splashes her face with water in preparation for her swim.

All 43 participants make the plunge into the 68 degree water as the race begins.

The swimmers make their way towards the first buoy marking the beginning leg on the 1 mile course.

A swimmer makes a triumphant emergence from the water as she sprints towards the finish line.

Winners gather for the drawing for a pair of round-trip Jet Blue Airways tickets,
before enjoying an icy cold Harpoon Beer on the beach.
