Frisbee-ous (noun): excessive usage of Frisbees

Today, it was 95 degrees outside!!! You know what that means! Take out your sunscreen, throw on your swimming suites, and head over to Spectacle Island with Save the Harbor Save the Bay!

6 different camp groups along with the awesome All Access Boston Harbor crew boarded the Providence II and headed to Spectacle Island :)

Spectacle Island is a short 4 mile boat ride from Boston and is home of the tallest hill in the entire Boston Harbor. Most people don't believe this fact, but the entire island was built off of trash!!! There are numerous activities to do on this island such as flying kites, playing football, hiking, boating, fishing, and of course, swimming.

As you may or may not know, Spectacle Island has always been a great place to swim, but this year, we have kicked it up a notch!

Ladies and gents, boys and girls, All Access Boston Harbor has added FRISBEES to our awesome trips out to Spectacle Island...and from here on forward, Spectacle will be...EPIC!!!

Staying Cool At Frisbeach

Hi Everyone!

Frisbee Guy is back to tell you about the rest of the fun we had at Spectacle Island. It was a great day on Wednesday, even though it was the hottest day of the summer. Then, Thursday came.   Guess what?Yup ....  it was even hotter.

We began our day as we always at the Bank of American Pavilion.  After all the groups arrived it was was time to sail off to Spectacle Island. This trip had the greatest amount of kids so far this summer on the Harbor Islands.

Lunch was our first item on the agenda.  Once  we were done eating it was time to explore Spectacle Island.   I began with a hike up to the top of Spectacle Island. The view of Boston from  atop of Spectacle Island was amazing.  Since the weather was scorching hot,  I decided it was time to head off to the water.  I grabbed my frisbees and headed into the water.  Most of the groups decided not to go swimming today. Luckily one group decided to swim. This group was none other than our friends from Revere.  I spent the day teaching the kids from Revere how to throw and catch frisbees.

We decided to play a game called 1000.  The way you play is one person is the thrower and shouts a number; for example - - 500.    If someone catches the frisbee they would earn 500 points. The person who adds up to 1000 first becomes the new thrower.  We played a few games of 1000.

After the games the staff joined me in the water to play frisbees with our friends from Revere.  Soon after  it was time to head back on the boat to town. All in all, it was a great first week of Frisbeach!

Hey! Who turned on the heat?

Well if there has to be a heat wave let it be the week we go to Spectacle Island, thank you very much. Before we left for the island this morning we met with all the kids under the Bank of America Pavilion tent and I asked how many people thought the harbor was really dirty? About 150 kids and staff raised their hand. After I told the story about the clean up of the harbor I asked the question again and about 5 people raised their hand. Everyone agreed they were going swimming today. How could you not -- it's 145 degrees. Okay. I might be exaggerating a little. I do that sometimes but it was wicked hot. How hot was it? It was so hot Thi fell out of her shoes.

On the boat ride out to the island we handed out two cases of plums which were juicy and delicious. One girl looked like she needed something to do on the boat so I sent her off to count all the doors on the boat. There were 25. She got the answer right so she got to drive the boat for a few minutes. Fortunately she didn't hit any islands.

Once everyone had lunch and brought their trash back to the boat so the bay-gulls wouldn't get it, groups went off in different directions. Some went to play kickball or frisbeach with Davis the master frisbee man. Other groups went straight to the beach to swim. And one group came with me to look for the treasures of Spectacle Island.

We found some amazing beach glass (yes we put it all back) on the non-swimming beach. We found a light green knob off the top of a glass tureen which was absolutely stunning. I've never seen that color beach glass before. But the sun made a lot of the glass too hot to handle so the simple solution was to head over to the swimming beach and toss ourselves into the drink. No argument there.
