Back at George's Island!

The crab trap with only a
few crabs :(.
Monday I went to the Children's Museum where we fished, colored and played four square with the kids. We also had a touch tank for all the crabs we caught, but unfortunately we did not have much luck catching a lot of them. At one point we thought we had caught something because one of the kids said that their rod was getting hard to reel in, so we went over to help and the rod looked like a 50 pound fish was on the hook! The rod was bending but it ended up just being stuck on something and was caught in the water. Then I went to go play four square and the kids were so competitive! Every round felt intense because I felt like I was always the target to get taken out. And did I mention it was my birthday!!

Me helping the kids learn
about crabs!
Tuesday is all access and we're back at George's Island! I did fishing while the other half of the group went to go see the dark tunnel and play sports. Unlike two weeks ago when we last came to George's Island, today we caught A LOT of crabs. The last time we were here we had very bad luck trying to catch crabs, we caught only a hand-full, but today we caught like 30 of them! I showed the kids how to correctly hold them because they were so anxious to do it. Some even tried to put their hand in the touch tank and grab one! This was surprising because never in my life would I randomly stick my hand in a tank full of crabs, especially when you can't see through the water! To each's own!

Until next time,

Starting week 2!

This picture was taken on the dock during a safety talk for the campers.

I'm very excited to start week 2 of working at Save the Harbor Save the Bay. Even though I am still struggling to wake up early, it is worth it coming here everyday to get on the ferry and work with the kids fishing with them on the dock. Yesterday I went to Camp Harbor view and I must say it was extremely hot. Once we got off the boat we started setting up our crab trap and gathering our first group of kids. We instructed them about safety and how to fish properly, but surprisingly they were already familiar and had previous fishing experience.

Baiting the fishing rod at Georges Island

Today I went to Georges Island where we were fishing with the kids and playing sports with them. We did not catch any fish but as usual we caught plenty of crabs! We also used a flounder fish as bait we had to cut it up and as you can see in the picture above I was placing the bait on the fishing rod. We caught Green crabs, Jonah crabs, and Red rock crab. It was raining but we managed to continue fishing and the kids didn't mind at all. Once we caught the crabs they were very intrigued and excited to hold them. We got to show them how to tell the difference between a male and female crab.

Hi I'm Vince, Nice to Meet You

Just another day in the office.
My Name is Vince Vila I am from Brighton, my parents are from Peru which I recently visited about two years ago. I like to do hands on activities and move around a lot because it is way better than sitting down doing paper work. When I have nothing to do I usually like to listen to music or go and hang out with my friends.

I think Save the harbor save the bay is a great job for me because I like to be active and I have been dealing with younger kids all my life so I have good experience working with them. I have 3 younger siblings which at the moment are 9, 11 & 15. When they were younger I would always take care and look after them when my mom wasn't around and I still do to this day, so being around younger children isn't anything new to me.

I am excited to join the Save the Harbor Save the Bay team!

Sincerely, Vince Vila
