Not Your Average Clinic

Save the harbor kids and friends
This is Saturday brought yet another wonderful
opportunity with Save the Harbor! This time we were able to meet in the confines of beautiful Fenway Park. As a Boston native, it is always a great day when you get the chance to enter one of Americas most beloved parks right in your city. I was also able to share this opportunity with my brother Brian again. I love these events because I am able to bring friends and family with me so they can experience these moments with me. We all met up at 9:00AM in front of the Citgo sign in Kenmore (Well almost all, someone was lost). The weather was just right, not too hot and pretty clear skies which was great. When we were all there we walked over to Fenway Park together and waited by Gate D until they allowed us all to file in. We snapped some pictures outside of the park because it is only right.

We waited patiently outside and they finally let     us  all in. We were seated right behind the    Redsox   dugout with the Amazing Green Monster  in plain  view. Not only did we get to see Fenway  Park for  FREE, we were also given FREE Red  Sox T-  shirts! Who can be mad at free stuff? As  we all  excitedly put our T-shirts on, we listened  to a  couple people speak; a spokeswoman for  Coca-  Cola and spokesmen for the Taylor  Hooton  Foundation. There were words of  wisdom as well as their mission for healthier  youth.

After the short speeches, we were cycled thru workshops where we did some exercises and stretches that the pros would do on a regular basis. There was an obstacle course and an agility ladder. My favorite was the obstacle course which I failed badly, not once but TWICE (Sad face). I still had a lot of fun and would love to do it again. We also got to ask a couple of Red sox players some questions which was really cool. Overall, it was a great day with some great people!

Let's Go Red Sox!

Hey Guys!

It's your Save the Harbor/ Bay blogger Anicia here to tell you all about my Red Sox Day-- let's go Boston!
So the day at Fenway was filled with fitness, health, and adventure, and meeting new people!

Save the Harbor/Staff at Fenway (including Me)
Meeting a lot of Boston youth from different teams and schools was awesome! They all were energized and were all there for the same purpose as the Save the Harbor/Bay Staff... to learn ways to be and stay healthy through fitness!

Some members of the South Boston Little League

Although all of the workouts were EXHAUSTING I had tons of fun! Plus as a treat we met TWO fellow players on the BOston Red Sox team-- I was so excited at that point! Thanks Fenway!

Baseball Madness!!!

Last Saturday a few summer staff and I attended Fenway Park's Annual Baseball Clinc. This year, Fenway staff partnered with Coca-Cola to dedicate their Saturday morning to help promote healthy lifestyles to young people such as myself.

I have never attended a Baseball Clinic, so when Bridget explained that we basically practice baseball skills and do baseball drills with Red Sox players, including David Ortiz, I was all in! I have always loved the park and I love the Sox, so it was bound to be an awesome Saturday.  However, there was one catch...

Our day started at 9:45 AM.

We started the day listening to a speech about the negative effects drug usage, such as steroids, may cause to the human body. One fact that I shocked me was that the largest steroid users are now high school girls! Girls, there are many ways to get into professional sports, using steroids isn't one of them!

The day lightened up, and we participated in various work out drills that the Sox players often use. Then we listened to another speech on nutrition and how a healthy and balance lifestyle is critical for a happy life!

I picked to show everyone a renewed way to do jumping jacks!

Everyone do it on 3!

GOOOOOOO!

One of my favorite part about our day, was listening to Jose Iglesias and Ryan Lavarnway's journey to the major league and what it is like being a part of the Red Sox's franchise. They were both inspirational, funny, and most importantly humble. My sister and I were sitting front row, and I was going to ask them to take a photo with us for memory's sake, but they said they were going to meet us back in the entrance, so I decided to wait. Unfortunately, they were unable to do any meet and greets, so we were unable to take a photo with them :(

The lesson of the day: DON'T WAIT! BE ASSERTIVE!

It was not the best way to end such an awesome morning, but it did not ruin our day!

Better luck next time, right?

Red Sox Clinic Event!

Hey guys! So I went to another awesome event this past weekend and it was pretty cool to see some Red Sox baseball players at Fenway Park. Although, I wanted to get an autograph from them and get pictures with them, I took a few from a distance. What I realized about the baseball players is that even though they're celebrities, they are just normal people like me. They were so humble, and funny! They actually had a "bromance" moment too! I also had fun, doing a few physical activities. The trainers got to teach me a few warm ups that the actual Red Sox baseball players do before they play in the field. Here take a look! I learned a few things from this event, always warm up before you play any type of sport so you can be all set once you're performing, and most importantly to stay healthy and in shape!

Its not bye, it's see you later!

Stay tuned.

For Immediate Release

Environmental Educator Bruce Berman of Boston University and Save the Harbor / Save the Bay was chosen "Most Valuable Teacher" by JetBlue Airways and will throw out the first pitch at game two of the Boston Red Sox / New York Yankees homestand in Fenway Park on Saturday, April 9, 2011.

Berman teaches an undergraduate course in marine science as well as American management, business communication, and Boston Harbor history and policy in the Department of Administrative Science at Boston University's Metropolitan College where he has introduced hundreds of students from around the world to Boston's extraordinary harbor.

Bruce is also the lead architect of Save the Harbor / Save the Bay's free youth environmental education programs that have connected 50,000 youth and teens to Boston Harbor and the Boston Harbor Islands since 2002.

He and his wife Save the Harbor / Save the Bay's President Patricia Foley are avid Red Sox fans and live for most of the year on their boat "Verandah" at Constitution Marina on Boston Harbor.
"Actually, it is quite and honor - and a big responsibility" said Berman, 55, who watches nearly every Red Sox game but acknowledges that he hasn't played much baseball since 1971. "I have much more experience casting for big striped bass on Boston Harbor than I do pitching at Fenway Park. But I have been practicing since I got the news last week, and promise to try to my best for my team."

"Maybe they will play "Love That Cleaner Water" quipped Berman who has been the spokesman for Save the Harbor / Save the Bay for 20 years.
