First day

My Name is Abdi, I'm 17 years old and I attend Madison Park high school in Roxbury. This is my third year working with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, and its fun coming back each year. Last week was orientation week. We got to visit one of the sites that we are going to work at this summer which was the Children's Museum. We also got to go to Georges Island, which was really fun. One thing I disliked at Georges island was the "Dark tunnel", it's really scary going in there. It was completely dark and really hard to get to the other side of the tunnel. Besides that, it was really fun experience. Another site we got to visit was Carson beach, where we got to kayak, paddle board, sand rake, and fish print. It was really fun and exciting. I look foward working with SHSB this year because each year it gets more and more fun.

At the Seashore

Hi Everybody!

My name is Samantha (most people call me Sam) and this is my second year with Save The Harbor, Save the Bay. Last year I had the privilege of working at Camp Harbor View for the first half of the summer. I had the opportunity to go on fishing trips with the kids and see their excitement when the reeled up a fish; whether it was a skate or a flounder, their amazement was contagious. One of my favorite parts of working at Camp Harbor View were the hikes to the old fort. The kids loved exploring the onerous old fort and jumping out in an attempt to scare their friends. They even scared me once or twice!

For the second part of the summer I was at Carson Beach. Here I got to play soccer with America Scores, which I absolutely loved! I’ve played soccer for the past five years at the O’Bryant where I also play softball for Ms. Ryan. Being at Carson was great because we also had the chance to go kayaking and paddle boarding. The kids there loved to play four square and catch. Teaching the kids to clam was an interesting task. The highlight of the summer at Carson Beach was sand raking! The beauty of the beach covered in art was indescribable. I’m excited for yet another year of adventure, education and surprises!

First Time for Everything

My name is Kharliyah Ortiz, I'm 17 years old, and I attend the John D. O'Bryant. This is my first year working at Save the Harbor Save the Bay and I'm looking forward to every bit of it. I've heard so many good things about this organization and I can't wait to see what this summer has in store for me. So let me explain:

Have you ever been afraid to try something new? This week at Carson Beach was my first time kayaking. It was a fun and daring experience. As we put on our life jackets the instructor explained the rules and what to do out in the water. My heart was racing with fear and my mind with so many "what if's" like, "What if my kayak flips over?" or "What if I fall in the water". I hid my panic as my partner and I carried our kayak down to the shore. We get to the water, hop in, and paddle out. Further and further until I can't see the ocean floor. I was mostly scared but kept it cool, or so I thought. Up until one of my coworkers pulled up in their kayak next to ours and threatened us to jump in or get flipped. By that time I think my fear was pretty visible and audible from my screaming. I was assured that nothing would happen because my life jacket so I toughened up and hopped in. The ice cold water hit my body in a rush that was refreshing and shocking. That was my first time kayaking and it was a blast.
