George's Round 2

Hello Everyone!

Two-hand touch football with the kids!
This week was the second time that All Access made a visit to George's Island. I was stationed at Sports this week and had the opportunity to visit the dark tunnels once again, but this time, as an expert. As always, David led our expedition into the dark passages. Along with our usual group, we had the opportunity to show a few of the Save the Harbor interns who usually stay in the office around the island. The second time in the tunnels was even better than the first. Instead of being the one who gets scared, I was the one doing the scaring this time. We got to lead some of the campers into our "trap" led by David  of course. The weather that day was extra chilling, making the hairs on our arms stick up. You could feel the temperature drop when you walked through the tunnels. This made the presence of the "Lady in Black" that much stronger. It probably made the experience for the kids much more exciting and fun! It was fun to see how scared everyone was, knowing that was how I felt last time.

During sports, I got to play football with some of the campers. We invited them over when we saw them aimlessly walking around the fort. It always feels good to bring some smiles to a few friendly faces. We organized a game of 4 on 4 with, no tackling, but two hand touch. I also had the pleasure to witness our senior harbor educator Jennifer "master" her football throw. Maybe she will be the next Tom Brady by the time summer ends! The Patriots will finally find the perfect quarterback replacement!

Until next time,
Henry

Wind and Rain and Scary Tunnels

Hello Boston!

Periwinkles and Asian Shore Crabs
Wind and rain can't stop our invasive species hunt!
This Monday was a soggy one for sure! I spent my Monday at Camp Harbor View where the wind was blowing strong, the rain was coming in sideways, and the chill went straight through you. Our first group learned about invasive species and helped us gather Periwinkle Snails and Asian Shore Crabs from the beach. We tried to hide our next group from the wind as we played What You Can't See Under the Sea on a covered pathway. As the weather progressed, we took our last group up to the fort on the island. This was my first time exploring the fort and the kids were excited to give me a spooky guided tour. At the end of the day, we had a slow and bumpy, yet heated,
boat ride back to Boston.

The perfect spiral
On Tuesday, I got to visit George's Island for the first time. Although it was still a little cold, it was not nearly as wet as Monday. When we got to George's Island, my group forced me to go into the dark tunnels that line the forts there. They definitely got a good laugh as I screamed and shuffled through the completely dark stony path. After one walk through the tunnel, I had experienced enough scary dark places for one week. I spent the remainder of my time on the island playing sports with the kids. I am quite proud to announce that my football throwing skills are getting better each day! Though I probably will not be a quarterback any time soon. I am looking forward to spending the rest of the week on George's Island and learning more of the history there.

Sea you out there,

Jennifer Leiendecker

A break from the kids

Hello everybody. So usually people think Mondays are boring but this Monday was an exception because it was staff day for Save the Harbor. We took the ferry to Spectacle Island for the day and we did a lot of activities. In total the staff consists of about 30 people so we had tons of sandwiches, chips and water. When we landed on the island we put all of the food down and we ran up the hill to one of the highest points on the island. When we got up there we basically split into two groups. There was a group for frisbee and a group for football. I decided to play football because I am not good at frisbee at all. We played a really long game in the blaring sun for a while until we needed water and we decided to go back down to the dock.

We ate lunch under a big tent in the shade where we had delicious subs, chips and cookies.  After lunch we went in the ocean for a swim to get a release from the heat. The shore was really rocky so you needed sandals to walk down to the water. Of course only a handful of us actually had water shoes so it was a struggle to get into the water but once we did it felt great. The water was super refreshing and we played some frisbee. When we got out we relaxed for a little while before the ferry came to take us home. We had a great day on Monday playing with our coworkers and friends on Spectacle. We all love working with kids but it was nice for a change to spend the day with our friends. I love the people I work with but now it’s time to get back to work with the kids this week.

See you later

Back To Dear Islands........

Back To Dear islands
Good mornings everybody, we are back at dear special islands aka spectacle. It's are fourth week at all access and I enjoy being at spectacle island because I enjoy playing sports with the campers that come to the island with the crew of save the harbor save the bay. Last week I enjoyed the sports we played the crew I had for all access and came with me to play sports with the campers was Abel. He helped me out to give joy and smiles to the campers to play sports. The group in this image on my right is idill campers. I enjoyed playing sports with these kids because they love playing soccer and some of them got some skills on me, that day I had jeans on so one of the kid was coming toward me and when he did with the ball he did a little trick on me so I'm like I'm going home I feel embarrassed because he got my ankle when I was trying to go forward at him. After we played soccer we played catch but some of the kids said that kickball, football, track, and basketball are boring that soccer is the best so some of us said no football it's better than all the sports right now. But eventually football was the best sports out of the whole sports that what I think. I don't know about the rest but that what I know and choose. When I was talking to a kid about that he disagree with me but I said no that is okay, we could ask the whole camper to see which one is the best. At the top of the hill when we was playing sports aka soccer my team won because I gave a good pass to this little girl that was wide open and looking innocent. I told her to make the last goal so when she did she crossed the goalie and scored so my team beat Abel's team. But to be continued with exciting summer story............

Sincerely, Carlos Garcia

Fishing and Football

Today we had tons of fun! The first group we had were interested in starting a football game almost as soon as they arrived. They made plans and plays all day until they had lunch. They ran up and down the sand, throwing and catching, having fun with their friends, teammates and the harbor explorers. All of the kids had so much fun, we already have plans to continue the game in the future.

After football, another group went down to the water to learn how to fish. They had a blast. We didn't catch anything, but they had fun just learning to cast. They all took turns casting, helping each other and always asking questions if they didn't know how to do something. Honestly out of all of the groups I've taught to fish, this was one of the calmest and most patient of them all.
I'm excited to see everyone again and to continue the fun of the summer, Joe. S
