Piers Park

This week at Piers Park we caught some crabs using a hot dog as bait. Once the kids put the crabs in the bucket they figure the crab was getting hungry and decided to feed it some hot dog but the crab wasn’t eating any of the hot dog. One of the kids said the crab couldn’t eat the hot dog because it’s floating above the water and it needed a weight to get the hot bog on the bottom of the bucket. So the kids decided to put the weight inside the hot dog so the hot dog was able to reach the bottom of the bucket but the crab wasn’t eating any of the hot dog so finally one of the kids said the crab is full because when the crab got caught he was eating a hot dog. Kids like finding things out while experimenting that is what i learned this week and the kids learned if they used a hot dog as a bait then try feeding it a missile.

Introduction

Hi my name is Senait Adugna. Glad to be back for my third year with Save the Harbor Save the Bay. I am 19 years old heading into my second year of college at Pine Manor. My first week with Save the Harbor Save the Bay was exciting. I was pleased to see the kids from years ago as well as getting to meet new kids. Kids ask question mostly about everything. They wonder why we use a hot dog or a missile as bait and why fishes have a 15 minutes memory…etc. Their questions fascinates me on how wide their imagination is.

My first week at the Courageous Sailing Center we caught a lobster with a missing claw, small fish, and crabs from the lobster trap. Kids from courageous sailing center are always happy to be able to fish and not just that but they actually catch a fish. That always gives the other kids a confident to be able to catch a fish. We started are day at Piers Park Sailing Center with a game called capture the flag. A group of eight kids each. It was a fun game to start the day and to get the kids wormed up. The kids were exited to fish and pull the lobster trap right after we finished the game. The kids caught worms, missile and crabs. It always is fun to be able to play with kids and teach them thing they don’t know and even sometimes end up learning something you didn’t know.

New Adventure at Piers Park

Hey this is Senait. I worked at Piers Park East Boston this week. We caught some crabs and lobsters and we went fishing too. The kids like fishing but they get the lines tangled most of the time. I have fun fixing them. Piers Park is different than South Boston because there we can go into the water and go swimming, and there are many places to do crabbing. Even though we can't do these things in East Boston we have lot of fun with the kids. Getting to know new kids is fun too - there are so many different names and faces it's like a new job and I like it. At East Boston there are a lot of places to go. We go to Constitution Beach with the "Y" kids, Revere Beach, and Winthrop Beach. There are so many places to go and see so many new things.

Team Quahog!

Greetings from Harry McDonough
This week it was all about Northern Sea Stars and digging for Quahogs to use as bait. Yea Team Quahog! Not sure what a quahog is? It can also be called a chowder clam or a hard clam. We had a lot of fun searching in the waters off the beach for these clams and we definitely got wet in doing so. These hard clams tend to bury themselves in
the sand and sometimes just a small piece is visible.

Northern Sea Star hunting was on the agenda every day this week. We found an area just before the bridge at Pleasure Bay where lots of big sea stars live. We even found one that was eating a mussel. Before bringing them back to our touch tank we had some fun sticking them all over our bodies! Here to the right is a picture of the 3 Save the Harbor educators with our sea star findings. ~ Kat

Crabbing with Mussels

Hi, my name is Senait Adugna, I am a Youth Program Assistant for the Harbor Explorers Program at the Harry McDonough Site. (I'm wearing the blue shirt in the picture at right.) We do a lot of activities with the kids, such as crabbing and fishing. We catch many Spider crabs, Red Rock crabs, Asian Shore crabs, and Green crabs by using mussels as bait. The kids really enjoy finding and smashing the mussels. We spend most of the time crabbing and they don't get tired of it.

Sometimes we walk to the bridge to fish. I enjoy teaching the kids how to cast. We don't always have the best of luck, however, last week we caught two small fish. I enjoy working at this site because the kids always have great questions and I love being able to answer them.
