Seafood Festival..........

      SEAFOOD FESTIVAL

photo IMG_0667_zpscozm7x1j.jpg      On a Sunday morning, I knew it was going to be a great day because I was waiting to go to work and after work go to the Puerto Rican Festival with friends and family. At the seafood festival there were a lot of people visiting and volunteering at the pier, but mostly what Save The Harbor Save The Bay and the people that were there was enjoy the talent shows on the pier. We had a lot of kids coming to us for a fish print, it was exciting because we were teaching the kids how to paint their fish and make their fish print on the paper. It's awesome to work as a team and think of an idea what colors to use on the fish.

My favorite part of the seafood festival was the little talent shows. At the talent show the most funniest part and awesome part was the guy dancing. He said that he was on America's Got Talent. It was cool because his dancing part was crazy. He jumped over four people but I thought it was going to be five because there was a kid in the middle but the guy told him it was to dangerous for so he returned to his parents.

Boston Seafood Festival

This past weekend was Boston seafood festival held at the Fish Peir and it was cool!!! When I arrived I saw lots of people, food, performances and activities. There was face painting, learning how to write in Japanese, making origami, and more! We did fish prints. I think we nearly did 100 fish prints and the kids loved it and they were making some amazing prints with the skate. Most of the kids made more than two prints, and some took them home.  Others let us keep it for the mural we are making out of the fish prints. There was an outstanding dance performance and an acrobatic performance and it got everyone pumped up and excited.

See you next time!

Seafood Festival & My First Time at Children's!

Sunday, August 2, I attended my first ever seafood festival! From 11-3 I did fish printing with the kids, as well as coloring and word searches. The kids were intrigued by the "real fish" we were using for the prints. Some parents were even surprised by the flounders! One young girl was giving out glitter tattoos in exchange for a donation to the mspca! I gladly donated and got a silver peace sign on my arm. I ended a great day with free tasty burger!

Tuesday was my first time at the Boston Children's Museum! We helped the kids fish and had them touching crabs! They were so fascinated by the spider crab we caught. When the day was slow and there was no kids I took an opportunity to let my artistic side shine! I used the chalk to make the Save The Harbor logo under the tent. I'm sure the crazy hail storm I ran through to get home washed it away, but not before I took a picture!
Stay Creative!

Old Friends

This Sunday Save the Harbor/ Save the Bay participated in the Fourth Annual Seafood Festival! Over all, we worked with children who were there and made fish prints with them using flounder. By the time the event was over I had paint all over my hands, and even some on my leg! They are all so creative. None of the fish prints came out the same way because everyone did something different. Whether it was the color combinations or the design of where the paint was, they all were unique. That's something I admire about children: their imagination can take them anywhere.

To my surprise, halfway through the event there was a performance and the voice sounded familiar. When I went to go check it out I saw an old friend who now goes by Snap. We used to dance together when we were young, I knew him before his performance name, and when he had a little Afro. It was nice seeing him again and knowing he's doing well! You'll never know what to expect when working with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay!

Until next time,
Ana

Nothing but Fish Prints

There's nothing better than making fish prints with tons of kids at the Seafood Festival at the Fish Pier. That's how I spent my Sunday afternoon. Children came down to the Fish Pier with their parents to enjoy a wonderful day of festivities. We were there making fish prints with the kids for the whole time we were there. From red and blue, to orange and grey, to yellow and blue fish, every color of fish you could have imagined was probably made at the Seafood Festival. It's always a blast helping kids make fish prints too. I helped make a print with a kid. He said it was his first time in America, and his first time seeing a flounder; the type of fish we used for the prints. I was excited that I was able to help him with his fish print and I was even more thrilled that I was of of his first experiences in America.

Although we were there making fish prints with the kids, there were other things going on at the Seafood Festival. There were street performers, and food trucks of different seafood. There was a street performer there that was amazing! He was a dancer from Boston. Anything you threw at him he could do. He could tap dance, he could pop lock, and he could do flips at will. He was one of the most exciting performers of the day, and by far my favorite one. See you on my next blog, Preston.

Seafood Festival!

Hi everyone! It's blog time!

So, this past Sunday I had the opportunity to participate in the 15th Annual Boston Seafood Festival. Since the festival was going all day long, we split into shifts to run the Save the Harbor/Save the Bay booth in the children's activity area. I ended up on the last shift of the day, though the festival itself continued for a little while after our shift ended. When I arrived I was quickly overtaken by the smell of delicious, freshly cooked seafood. I could feel myself becoming more and more hungry as I passed each booth in search of ours.
Richard, hanging up a freshly made fish print.

Eventually, I managed to track down the Save the Harbor booth, where we would be doing fish printing with the kids that came by. We had a big table set up with a couple of flounder ready to be printed on it. As kids came by, they would get to pick up to 2 colors of ink to put on the fish. Then, we would help them spread the ink over the fish, paying special attention to the fins, tail, and head. Once that was done, we would gently press a piece of paper to the fish to transfer the ink. Once the print was done, the kids would sign it and we hung it up to dry, so they could come back and pick it up later.
Ivy, one of the Seafood Fest staff, gets in on the fun!
Till next time,

Seafood Festival / August 2nd, 2015

The seafood festival along the pier in Downtown, Boston is an amazing site to see with thousands of people filling the area with friends, family, and tourist. Both sides of the pier were filled with tons of seafood vendors, activities and performances that lured the attention of guest. A very well put together event on all ends! Being apart of the festivities was an amazing honor, considering that we got to do something that we enjoy most...helping children have a great time!

Along with just talking to kids and families getting to know them and ask about their experience while out at the festival, the Save The Harbor/Save The Bay staff welcomed them to fish print several of our pretty flounders caught inside Boston Harbor. The kids were really creative and used their imagination to mix colors and create awesome fish prints. It was also really cool to teach people who have never seen a live fish that close right before their eyes how to do fish prints. I even did a print myself that was pretty cool!

Looking forward to printing again!

Fantastic Fish Printing at the Boston Seafood Festival!

Today, Save the Harbor joined in on the festivities at the Boston Seafood Festival on the Fish Pier! Our staff had a blast hanging out in the children's activities tent with all of the seafood-loving kids of Boston. We spent the day teaching kids and families the ancient art of fish printing, or Gyotaku! We used fresh flounder from the harbor and everyone was shocked to see that we were using real fish! We used India Ink and newsprint paper to create our one-of-a-kind art pieces. Everyone had a blast and was so proud of their work, refrigerators all over Boston are going to be covered in fish prints this week!

Mary Read the Pirate also joined us for some storytelling in the tent! Eager children crowded around her as she told stories of how she became a pirate on Boston Harbor. She also taught everyone how to tie square knots and sing sea shanties! She rewarded all of the successful square knotters with a piece of foreign currency from her travels.

It was a fantastic day spent outside on the fish pier trying delicious seafood, watching street performers, and making beautiful fish prints. I'm already looking forward to next year's Seafood Festival!

Fish Artists

On Sunday, I had the privilege of attending the Seafood Festival on the Fish Pier near the harbor. I have never done anything like it before, probably because I am not used to seeing fish and playing around with them. We had to paint a fish with different types of colors of ink. At first we tried it ourselves and painted it all over and drenched it in so much ink. The kids proved to be way more creative than us, and their fish art looked much better than ours.  The kids were very interested in what we were doing. They kept on gathering around our tent and since sometimes the pattern of the previous fish art would stay, it looked like a very nice collaboration on a fish. It was amazing the turnout we got, even though it was raining and pouring.

Painting the fish and putting rice paper over it may seem like a simple task, but it is still very fun. I think that what had the kids more entertained and what had us so into it was that there was a good variety of different types of fish, there was long, short, wide, narrow, flat and round. It was a fun experience to see how different fish can be.

Boston Seafood Festival!

Despite Sunday's wash out weather, there was a lot happening on the Boston Fish Pier.  The Seafood Festival was well under way and a little rain certainly didn't deter the crowds from the great food and many activities going on.  Our main event of the day was fish printing.  Although we received some strange looks at first, as we spread the ink over the fish, once a few example pieces were done people were over joyed to join in.

Soon our table was crowded with kids and families wanting to make beautiful pieces art.  Some tough decisions had to be made throughout the day, like whether to use blue or green or if the fish would look better in stripes or dots; but in no time our tent was lined in flounder prints of every color. The coolest part of the process was seeing the anticipation on the kids faces as the rice paper was lifted off of the fish and the design was revealed.  I'm really looking forward to seeing how each of the individual prints come together in our Save the Harbor mural!

Sunday, Paint

Sunday was a fun day going out the Boston Sea Food Festival and letting kids make some fish prints. It was nice see the kids face fill up with joy when they were painting their fishes and putting the paper on top to see what the  came out with. It wasn't just the kid who wanted to paint the fish, there were adults who came up to paint some fish. The funny thing about this was to see the reaction on peoples faces when they came up and ask if the fishes we were using were real fish and when we said yes the face they made were funny. But most people didn't seem to mind, some thought that it was pretty cool. The best part for people was to know that all the drawings that people made were going on a big mural. A nice thing about this day was seeing all the things around like someone dressed up as Jack Sparrow. I thought that it was Johnny Depp. There was also different things there like right beside us there was a face painting table. Over all I think that it was a pretty good day. Even though it was raining everyone enjoyed being there.

Fish Printing Fun!

Well, this is certainly something new. Never in my whole entire life have I seen such...creativity.

Working at the fishing event today was pretty interesting to see so many kids interested in fish printing, as it's something I would've never been brave enough to do as a kid. Another thing that amazed me was that you didn't have to continuously clean the fish, you could just put a little more of the base color that was desired and boom! New fish print.

One thing that was exciting was seeing kids add cool designs such as stripes and dots to their fish. Alot of parents wanted to take them home, but Lindsay made sure to reassure them that they would be able to visit the website and see their fish print online!

One of my Favorite Moments

The Seafood Festival on Sunday was definitely one of my favorite moments so far while working for Save the Harbor / Save the Bay. Before Sunday, I had no idea what fish printing was and when Sam told us that was what we were going to be doing, I was a little confused. Little did I know that fish printing is so much fun and so cool. The first one we did together was completely awesome; it was just a bunch of us that did it together just to try it out before we did it with the kids.
The kids liked doing the fish prints so much but were a bit disappointed when we told them they couldn't bring them home. I actually had this one kid that did a fish print with me that was completely unhappy about it, it was actually a little funny. He said he didn't like the final product, didn't want to sign it and didn't want to take a picture with it. It's a bummer that there are those kids that don't enjoy doing anything outside that doesn't involve a tv and video games, but every other kid that I had enjoyed it just as much as I did.

As I mentioned, the kids weren't allowed to bring them home. That is because they are going to be used to make a mural. I really want to help with putting it together so I can look at all the fish prints that were made that day. The kids were so creative about the colors that they chose to put together  and the designs that they had, a lot has stripes and polka dots. Although the event got off to a rainy start people had fun and plenty of kids came to us to do fish prints. We had to keep putting up lines of rope to hang them all to dry because we were doing so many of them. I definitely want to do more fish prints at some point in the future, they're so cool.

See you on the water,

May I Paint Your Fish?

 photo IMG_0051_zps402e8671.jpg

 photo IMG_0044_zps215e83df.jpg

This weekend has been a very interesting and colorful one. I arrived to the Seafood Festival at about 10:30 AM. People in lobster costumes were roaming around, kids swarming tents left and right and the distinct smell of various seafood filled the air. Me and my team began to set the table by placing numerous painting colors, fish and many pieces of paper on the table to catch the spilling paint. Sam first showed us how fish painting was done and then allowed us to try. It did not seem hard and it really wasn't. It was actually pretty fun. After a trial round, kids began coming up to the tables and asking if they could do some fish painting. Kids were using very nice colors and patterns. Purple base with green fins and golden polka dots. Blue, red and green patterned fish, all different types of really nice colors. The kids really enjoyed making fish paintings and were OK with leaving the beautiful paintings with us to put in a mural for other kids to see. I found that to be pretty awesome.

My first festival- the Boston Seafood Festival!

This Sunday was the first festival I have ever been to. The Seafood Festival 2014 was awsome, besides the weather of course. I was suprised because that same day, even though it was raining so hard and thunderstorming many people still stayed and attended the event. They all look like they were having a blast and so was I. There were people dressed as pirates, lobsters, crabs, and even a mermaid! There was great food, and the lines were crazy long.

The first kids to showed up, and try fish painting.

I remebered many people were attracted to our table because it was something different and intresting. We were doing fish painting and many people had never heard of it or knew what it was, including me. I remebered many random people walking by and asking, "is that a real fish?!" and were shocked that it really was. But after Sam taught all of us how to do it, it was really fun to do. I not only had fun that day, but also learned something new.

I'm sure I will be learning many more new things this summer with Save the Harbor.

Catch you later,
Nhu

The Seafood Festival

I usually spend my Sundays with my family but this past Sunday I was working at the Fish Pier doing fish prints with kids and representing Save The Harbor. The day started of well, it was a warm sunny sunday then things took a turn and it started raining and it wasn't a pleasant place to be. The people who were at the Fish Pier we're awesome enough to not leave and they waited the rain out. When it was pouring we had an opportunity to learn how to use paper and paint to make fish prints. In the beginning I felt like it was going to be complicated but Sam helped me out and after I gained some confidence I felt like a pro.

Sam showing us how to do fish prints
After I learned how to make the fish prints, I had the opportunity to help many little children and a few adults learn how to do it. All the kids that made their fish prints, depending on the color and the fish they chose,  came out beautiful. My favorite fish that we worked with was a Fluke, the Fluke was really flat and it made it really easy to print. The Fluke was one of the most popular fishes that the kids chose because we were using the colors Pink and Purple and the kids loved it because they were really colorful. I never expected to have as much fun as I did working on a sunday.

Seafood Festival Fun

Hello,

On Sunday, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay attended the 3rd Annual Seafood Festival celebrating 100 years of food, culture, and economy on the Boston Fish Pier. When I arrived, it was raining. But the rain didn't dampen the festivities that ran underneath big white tents along the pier. Senior Harbor Educator, Sam, and our Junior Program Assistants set-up a table to create fish prints.

Senior Harbor Educator, Sam, leading a fish print at the Boston Seafood Festival
Sam showed us how to create a fish print. We used a few different types of fish including flounder. First, Sam cleaned the fish from any residue it had. Second, he put several drops of acrylic ink on the fish; he choose a base color and an accent. Third, he spread the ink over the fish to make sure it covered its head, gills, fins, and head. Then, he cut a piece of rice paper, and he placed the paper on the fish. We helped him pat down and smooth out any ink spots. When he lifted the paper, a wonderful fish print was created.

After my shift ended, I was able to explore the festival which had music, art, and vendors. I even had a cup of chowder from No Name Seafood. It was a rainy yet rewarding day.

See you on the pier,

Iris Ayala
