First Catch

Hi Everyone,

Today's adventure took us to the Boston Children's Museum. Since there was no trip scheduled for All Access Boston Harbor for Mondays, we decided to extend our time at the Boston Children's Museum 'til four. Today as we began setting up shop at the Museum,  I was hoping we would catch a stripe bass or any kind of big fish.

We didn't end up catching stripe bass.   However, we did catch a small flounder. As the day progressed the number of crabs caught rose steadily. Out of all the kids that showed up today, two stood out above the rest. This first was a boy named Chris. When I first met Chris he told me he had never fished before. Manny asked Chris if he would like to learn how to fish.  Manny taught Chris how to cast a fishing rod  and then moved on to reeling up the line. While they reeling up the line Chris was overjoyed to see that he caught a crab.
Here Is Manny with Chris after his first catch

Chris rushed over to his mom to tell her his awesome news. After taking the crab off the hook and Chris and Manny placed it in the touch tank with the rest of the crabs. Chris quickly wanted to fish again to see if he could catch anything else. Chris was thrilled over catching a crab being his first time ever fishing.

Manny, Charlie, and I

After lunch it was time for our afternoon session at the Children's Museum. During this session a boy named Charlie stood out. When we met Charlie his mother said fishing and anything marine life was Charlie's passion. Charlie was from Laguna beach in Southern California. He told me that he likes to spend his days fishing or crabbing at local beaches. Charlie did everything from fishing with us to learning how to pull up a crab trap. Charlie was able to catch a few crabs in one of the traps. After Charlie spent the afternoon pulling up crab trap after crab trap, and holding crab after crab learning which type of crabs he had caught, Charlie began teaching his mother what he learned today. As they were leaving, Charlie asked his mom if they could come back tomorrow.

Spectacular Spectacle Island!

Karrisha, Kiauna (Me), Manny D, Ahmed, & Manny A

Hey, everybody, it's Kiauna aka Kiki again!
Spectacle Island was so much fun. Although it was blazing hot outside, we made the best out of it. The kids didn't seem to think it was too hot to play a fun game of kickball. After everyone slowly but surely made their way down to the beach, even those who swore they weren't going in the water, eventually got in to cool off.

The AABH team having some fun in the water

Everyday we aim to do at least one thing we've never done before and I swam at Spectacle Island for the first time. I had to cool off after kickball. One little girl was afraid to get in, so, naturally, I encouraged her to at least get her feet wet. My Lead Explorer, Carolyn, was nice and gave the girl a piggyback ride into the water. It was cute. We tossed around a ball, splashed a bit, and had fun. I'm not sure who enjoyed themselves more; the kids or us! Speaking for myself, I have to say, it was a great day! I got to know lots of different kids. The only downside of being at Spectacle Island is how little time we have. You know what they say.."time flies when you're having fun!"

The Fun Never Stops

Hey guys its Manny again!  Today I was another great day at the Boston Children's Museum.  While at the Children's Museum we were fishing and catch crabs from Boston Harbor, educating kids on the types of crabs we caught and teaching the kids how to fish.  Catching crabs comes easy to us, catching fish is much harder. After we catch crabs and whatever else we find in the crab trap (mussels, small striped bass) we set up a touch tank so the kids and adults can have a feel and learn about the sea creatures.  Most of the kids love the touch tank because its not something they always get to see.
Look at all of those crabs!
Although I love working at the Children's Museum, today was our first day at Spectacle Island and I could not wait to get there and swim!  David Coffin, our resident Maritime Historian, has all the staff paranoid, thinking they were going to get tossed in the water.  We had about 200 kids at AABH. Some kids I have seen already but most I'm just meeting for the first time. I love meeting and talking to the kids because all of them are excited to go explore and have fun at AABH.  It was a hot day today so you would have seen me in the water more than playing kickball.  Luckily, I ran away from David and didn't get thrown in.....but tomorrow I bet that won't be the case!

See you on Spectacle,
Manny

Second Day Out in The Harbor

Today was another wonderful day at Georges Island, which I doubt there will ever be any bad days at Save The Harbor/Save The Bay.  As always we started the day off drawing with the kids that came from different places.  After we got down to the boat and loaded all kids in, we got ready for the excitement to begin.

At Georges Island me and my group went down to the beach, skipped some rocks. and then went to check the crab traps.  My favorite part of the day was that I taught a kid how to skip rocks.  Even though it took a little while to grip right, we managed to get at least 3 skips, which I think was the coolest part of the day!  I feel accomplished thit at I got to help one kid do the one thing he never did before.  After, we went down to the dock to catch some crabs, that was kind of a fail because we didn't any bate to put in the crab trap. better luck next time I guess.

Rock Skipping Champs
All in all it was great ending for the week for Save The Harbor/Save The Bay. I look forward to many more.

First day out

And I got them all looking!
Hey guys its Manny, second year returnee :)

First day out in George's Island was by far the best time I have had.  I made new friends, had lots of fun and made lots of smiles.  Being this my second summer with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay I feel like this summer will be more  adventures and awesome than the last. What we did today  before we left for Georges island we were interacting with the kids.  One of the fun things we  did with the kids was drawing and coloring. I can tell they were really excited for the fun to begin. I like to say the group of kids I was interacting with were story tellers. The reason I say this is  because  it seemed like every one of them had strories on top of stories to tell. Which by the way they were all interesting stories. Aside from all of that, the other cool activies we did was going to Georges Island. The lucky ones came to play kick ball , soccer and play with the hollahoops with my colleagues Davis and Hung. All an all today was great day, looking forword to more of it. deuces

Super woman

Hello people!
This week I was at Piers Park and Courageous Sailing Center with Paula and Scott. The day was like every other day at Piers Park. We play games and go fishing and try to get some lobsters.
As for Couragoues Sailing Center, we got a lobster, crabs, star fish, and a little girl got a fish! The day was fun. I got to go sailing with the sailing people. After the program was over, me and Paula stayed for extended time. That's when the little girl caught her fish. The kids started to leave, and after everyone left, I fell into the water! Paula screamed and she pulled me out the water. Super man style!

My Letter to Our Mayor

Dear Mayor Menino,

Hi, my name is Amanuel Adugna. I'm 16. This is my first year with Save the Harbor / Save the Bay and also my first job. I go to Hyde Park High and am going into 11th grade. I live in Dorchester, Boston. At Save the Harbor / Save the Bay I have learned how to fish and also about the Boston Harbor. I like how Save the Harbor / Save the Bay’s All Access Program has a different group of kids every day and teaches them about the Boston Harbor and the island.

I want to see the Harbor being used for swimming, cookouts, beach parties, and for families and friends to come out to enjoy their day. This would allow them to appreciate the clean ocean and environment.

The destination on the Harbor that would bring more people to it in the future would be Spectacle Island. Spectacle Island was a trash dump and it was transformed into a place where people can go to enjoy their free time with their families and friends. This is possible after many years. I want to be able to enjoy fishing in the Boston harbor someday.

The people in positions of political power can help to improve the Harbor by setting up a policy on how they should clean up after themselves.

Sincerely,
Manny

Fish after fish after fish!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys. Today I'm at Boston children's museum and community boating with Annie, Aruna and Latoya. Today at children's museum we caught two spider crabs and some green crabs. I like children's museum because every day we save the harbor save bay teach so many kids how to fish and teach them the difference's between green crabs and spider crabs and so many other crabs. I think community boating is the best place to fish at because every time u drop a line in two seconds there will be a fish wetting to be pulled up and it just a fun place to be at, also I caught my second fish here at community boating. No one goes home disappointed, I know I didn't.

My first fish

Hey guys. last week Friday i was at piers park and courageous sailing center. I was with Sara, Senait and Dierdre.
At piers park we mostly play games and go fishing. when we got to pears park some of the kids was playing soccer. After some of the kids that didn't go on the ferry boat got to go fishing with us but we didn't catch any fish there , the only thing we caught were crabs. So the day at piers park is over and here I come courageous sailing center. So at courageous sailing center we caught a star fish and a good amount of crabs.the day was almost over and the kids started to leave, and there was one kid left and we was raping stuff up and I decide to grab a fishing rod and threw it in with out no bait after a 30second I pulled out a fish. I was really happy that day because it was my time catching a fish!!!.

Who caught the manny fish ???

Hey guys. This week I was at Blacks Creek and camp harbor view. Blacks creek is a fun place to be at because the kids there have a lots of energy and there ready to do anything. At blacks creek we do exploring and play games like shark and Minos. At camp harbor view the main thing we do is go fishing. On Thursday one of the kid camp harbor view asked me for some help on the fishing rod, as I was fixing it,the kid decides to pull the fishing rod up and be for I knew it I had a hook in my finger. It didn't really hurt when It happened but after some time it started to kick in. I wasn't happy that day but mistakes happen. After all that happened I had to hospital to take the hook out. I wasn't really happy to go to the hospital because I hate needles. That day I was with Sara,Scot and Annie. Sara drove us there and they met my mom.

Mr. Bob

Hi guys, This week I'm at Blacks Creek and Camp Harborview. At Black's Creek we go exploring and go up to the field and play "shark and minnows". A lot of the kids like to go a find green crabs, hermit crabs and, sometimes, go fishing. Even though we can never catch any fish we still try, some time the kids get happy when they get sea weed. Most of the kids that come to Blacks Creek know stuff about the ocean that I don't even know.

The funny thing that happened was that this girl keeps on calling me Bob. I don't know for what reason but I seemed to make her laugh!

Horseshoe crabs

It has been a long week with a lot of adventures. Last week we caught a lot of Asian shore crabs, Green crabs and 2 Horseshoe crabs. The most interesting thing we caught was the Horseshoe crab. It was my first time holding a Horseshoe crab and the kids really loved it. We caught it last week at Blacks creek.
