Captain's Coming

"At ease!"

This is one of the following phrases after the captain says "Captains Coming." This is a game that I play at school with my orientation groups. At Stonehill College I serve as one of the many Peer Mentors, the individuals who serve and organize orientation for the numerous incoming freshmen, and this is one of my many favorite games to play.

It was almost nostalgic to play this game this past weekend at Piers Park. The game is a rendition of the infamous Simon Say's. It carries a heavy nautical theme that allows our children to feel closer to the harbor. It consists of a Captain who says phrases that range from Mermaid (the kids fall to the ground and act as mermaids in groups of three) to swab the deck.
It is so amazing to watch and though it sounds fairly easy, please do not be fooled, especially in this time of Olympic prestige the game gets quite competitive if I do say so myself.

Enjoy these photos of our staff and group(s) playing Captains Coming.

Chess Daily

Its unreal to see how our staff has developed into an great group of educated, young professional, chess players.

Checkmate, Maeve
By now you've probably seen my post titled "The Game of Strategy" in which I speak highly about this game, Chess. Its unreal to think that we started off as basic, subpar, chess players to now well skilled individuals who educate the children of Camp HarborView on environmental issues and also develop their skills.
Maeve teaching a camper "The Ropes"

The kids normally start off asking questions such  as "Why are we playing this?" and "How do the pieces move?" All normal questions to ask. Most times the kids start off hating the game but after playing during our downtime they normally end up becoming amazed by such a unique game. There are also the students of Mr. Sumpter, the chess master, who take it easy on most of us but now are challenged by our level of understanding and discipline. The transformation is amazing.

Olliepalooza !

WOOOO, Olliepalooza

Being a resident from South Boston this event really gets me excited. Nothing brings the community closer together than events like these. From the slush icee's to the Kayem hot dogs that are served to all - this event is truly phenomenal. As everyone knows, this years event was held on arguably the hottest day this summer. And when I say everyone I am referencing those who heard my minute by minute commentary on the weather that did nothing but potentially make us hotter.
Nora telling some great stories to a young lad

The evening went well. It was right after our fan pier fishing tournament. We had great staff attend and things ran smoothly for the children. We did some fish printing and a ton of story telling with Nora our Pirate friend.

There was not a dull moment at this event. Personally I think its because of the free Hood Ice Cream cups but hey thats just me.

The Great Catch

Welcome Back !

I hope you have been waiting for this weeks follow-up to my previous blog. Well first things first, I owe you all an explanation of our experiment. I hope your excited. The purpose of our experiment on the rocky beaches of Camp Harborview is to see if we can get sand to return to the beach. That is the catch to last weeks conclusion of my previous post. In our cut off area (pictured to the right) we ask the children, with our assistance, to remove all periwinkles and Asian shore crabs to see if the sand will return in that designated area. Asian shore crabs are invasive and accompanied by periwinkles they are a formula for disaster. It is a long term experiment but we hope to soon have sand back in that portion of the beach and hope to find a solution to obtain sand all across the beach.
Success is better when shared with those who were right by your side

Also, we caught a Striped Sea Bass. Say it with me STRIPED SEA BASS (WOOO!). Atlantic regulations state that the sea bass has to be above 28" in order to keep it. Unfortunately our bass was well below the threshold but watching our phenomenal fishing club work collaboratively to reel in the fish was amazing. The three campers accompanied by their group leader caught their first, collective, fish ever! A great start to the week none the less.

Its been a great start and now we hope for a great ending. Stay tuned for more amazing stories here for the rest of the summer.

In due time,

Ahmed

Staff Day at Spectacle

Story time
This years staff day was one like none other. We started off with an initial plan that took a change in direction first thing in the morning. Then we attempted to try our back up and we still had to use an alternative plan. Thankfully our boss, Bruce, knows a thing or two about strategy.
Good play boys

We had some of our best laughs, experiences, and summer fulfillment together as a cohesive staff on Spectacle this past Monday. On our harbor trip in the morning we shared some amazing stories. Edward told us about his thrilling kayaking trip with the children at his site, Jahari shared his highs of his summer, and I shared the infamous "Save the Harbor/Save the Boxers" story. I felt like a bit of David, our harbor historian, rubbed off on me the way I'm able to share stories with groups now. I guess thats what a few years of AABH will do to one.

Photographer "A" at your service
Our annual All Access vs. No Access kickball game didn't happen but we still played football and frisbee amongst other activities. It was not a traditional staff day, but, we made the best of it. I also learned that I'm a decent photographer. Joe P. lent me a camera which I used to catch some photos throughout the day. I told him about my recent interest in photography and purchase of a Canon T5i DSLR camera. He gave me some pointers as I hope to start a new hobby, photography!

At the end of the day I walked away with nothing but smiles and a watermelon.

It was a good day.

Save the Harbor/Save the Boxers

It was an early Monday morning. The crew was rallied up and ready to tackle one of our final weeks. To gauge attention of persons, children, and beach-goers we (Luke, Chris, Joe, Abel & I) grabbed a few shovels and started replicating a beach couch we had saw on the internet. It was not an easy task. We failed twice but as the cliche goes, third time was a charm. At one point we had our own pre-Olympic type events that grabbed the attention of a few persons on the beach.

If you know anything about me personally yet I would hope that it about my love for dogs. With a love for dogs comes an immediate affection for them. We met a great new friend on this slow Monday. A stray dog by the name of Jax. Before finding out his name on the collar we checked we chose to dub him "Red Rocket." He was a happy, jittery, beautiful boxer. Fully healthy and energetic. Joe and I raced up and down the beach to find the owner of this amazing dog with zero luck. Thankfully, his collar had adequate information on it to allow us to return him to his owner. Jax seemed a bit tired and dehydrated so we fed him some water in the meantime.

The frantic owner picked up the phone and was ecstatic that we had called to inform her that we found the dog. Our team did well! Lauren, the owner of Jax, sent her friend Jeff and her daughter to get the dog as we waited by the beach house. It was a great reunion for the McCormack housing residents.

Here we go, CHV

We went fishing!
From left to right
Derrick, Javon, Dallis, Cori
Today, as always with the marvelous CHV crew, we embarked on our second fishing trip. Man was it a blast. This time around our fishing club was slightly slammer than last as the first session of CHV summer fun comes to an end. Some returners, Cory, and many new returners were excited as always to enjoy some time away from Long Island and on the water with Save the Harbor.
Irinna's Flouder (Nice Smile Cpt. Charlie)

It was a slow start to the day as we departed on the Belle at around 8:45. We sat down and went over guidelines, basics, and other essentials for the day as we enjoyed the tunes of Captain Charlies music playlist. Before we knew it as we moored in the harbor Irina made her first catch of the summer. A beautiful 14” flounder. Shortly after, Bang, J.D catches a skate.

The day continued with much success and leisure. All of our campers were delighted with the trip. Even the scorching hot sun couldn’t stop us from carrying out a great day of fishing for our partners. I think it is fair to say that today was a success!

Hey, Spider Crab !

Let me get right to it.

Normally I'd give you a run down of some sort but this time I am choosing to get right to the accomplishments of this week. You saw what I did there? Haha, you may have noticed I indirectly still gave you a run down your attempting to understanding by now. Do not be frantic its just a little fun.

Kye's 'Awe' face
On a serious note, our new session started today. It was not the easiest of days but definitely one well worth it. Many of our new campers apart of our fishing club can actually be considered novice fisherman. Not that were professionals or anything of that sort. SIKE. We at Save the Harbor are excellent fishermen/women. Just in our first day we landed two skate, tons of red rock crab, a couple sea bass bites and so much more.
The most impactful moment of our day though was watching our new friend, Kye, become so eager to understand what a Spider Crab was. He starred at it closely observing all of its legs and pincers with a face only describable by one word, awe. He had so many questions and we had all the right answers. Unfortunately after telling him he could not keep the crab, he assisted us in releasing it and the other catches of the day.

If today does not scream success I truly do not know what does.

The Hustle

Get to the choppa (Arnold Schwarzenegger voice)
On your mark, get set, GO!

This past thursday we wrapped up the first session of CHVs summer camp. The day came filled with a ton of emotion, excitement, and energy. On the last day the kids take part of the hustle. A morning event that takes up the first two blocks of the day before lunch. The camp is divided by lighthouses, the respective groups of the camp, to compete against each other.

Hes got the spirit !

The morning prep is analogous to that of a pep rally. All the children get together and paint their faces to match their lighthouse. Morning chants shake the dining common and all the kids become excited to attempt to be the first to complete the hustle.
One of our favorite campers was so entirely in the spirit of the hustle that he painted his entire body orange. The energy engulfing Long Island was contagious. At the end of the day Great Point Lighthouse(GPL) won the hustle. Though only one winner was crowned all the campers were considered champions. They endured the hot summer, long days of camp, and finished the first session of CHV. Lets have a round of applause for the campers.

Magic rigs up his first fishing rod

So, we have an all star on our roster at Camp Harborview. Many are familiar with him as he carries a name similar to a famous NBA legend, Magic Johnson, but he is much more than a former NBA athlete. Magic embarked on an adventure this week. He is fairly new to the fishing club and has an affinity for the work we carry out for CHV.

His first request was to teach him how to set up a rod. He knew the basics but wanted to familiarise himself with how to do it. He has long term goals of acquiring his own fishing rod and wanted our expert help. Its amazing to see the effect we have on our club members in such an immediate way. Contrary to former sites I have worked at this site has really allowed me to extend leadership and life advice to our members. We share an intimate connection that allows us all to enjoy our days.

After teaching magic the novice, intermediate, and somewhat advanced lining skills we attempted to recreate each. He succeeded! His face lit up with joy and he also is now teaching his fellow partners how to set up rods. This has so far been the highlight of the beginning portion of my summer.

Hello, Its Me ..... Again

How's it going everyone? My name, as you may know by now, is Ahmed M. Hassan. This is my ..... 6th summer with Save the Harbor? Yes!

Fan Pier Fishing Tournament 2K15 with Mentor Michael Fallon
I am a rising senior at Stonehill College studying Psychology and Business Administration. Interestingly enough when I started my tenure here at STH/STB I was beginning my high school career and now I am ending my college career. Man time sure does fly.

At Stonehill I serve as the Vice President of the senior class and a Peer Mentor amongst many other leadership positions. This summer I also interned at Off Wall St. Consulting Group. I keep a very busy schedule but I am more than excited about returning to this amazing organization.

I enjoy a wide variety of activities, most of which are listed in this blog in previous years. If interested just search anything pertaining to our company accompanied by "Ahmed" or solely my name and hopefully many articles arise.

Returning as a Lead Harbor Explorer my goals are to maintain a positive influence on the communities we serve and to expand educational awareness about the harbor/bay and their ever changing systems. Hopefully my future blogs resonate with you!

.... Btw you're great :)

Goodbye for now!

Climbing structure at Camp Harbor View, on Long Island

Hello and goodbye, friends of Save the Harbor!

I cannot believe that the summer has come to a close. I hope you are all taking advantage of this beautiful weather- keep getting to the beach, it will ease the back-to-school blues!

I wanted to start off with a photo from Camp Harbor View because it represents one of the greatest parts of working with Save the Harbor- there are always new adventures to be had. I did not work at CHV until the end of the summer, but it really made an impact- the staff is incredibly motivated, the campers are fun and engaging, and Long Island is stunning. This is the climbing structure that I was itching to get on (maybe some other time!) I am excited that CHV is making climbing a part of the camp because for me, rock climbing is stress relief, fun, and over-all upkeep. I am happier and healthier now that I rock climb, and I'm glad to see that kids in Boston are learning about this amazing sport!
Jaimie with a crab!

Sisters Jaimie and Julia with their mud-man!
I think I left a piece of me with all of the smiling friends we made at Blacks Creek this year. I'm going to hold on to these memories forever! Blacks Creek was the site I spent the most time at- thanks to our partners at Quincy Recreation, we enjoyed a great summer with the sailing center!  From finding crabs and eels to making sculptures and mudballs during our rare low-tide days, I'll have a lot to miss from this site!

Abdi at Blacks Creek with Jaimie and Jordan!
Alex and Jayda!
One of the most beautiful parts of this summer was seeing our JPAs take up leadership role. Here's Abdi with some of our kids at Blacks Creek. Abdi is the youngest in his family, but he took up leadership like a natural. From teaching the kids how to play "Taps" to taking over all of the responsibility that comes with being King of the Crab Trap, Abdi was an asset to our team this summer. He has a great time with the kids, and they are always smiling when he is teaching them.
Norah Dooley, Patty Foley,  and some of our guests at the Beach Bash!
Ahmed, Ketchup King, at the Beach Bash!
Similarly, I found myself learning from our JPAs! Jayda, above, is one of the most organized and motivated people I have ever met. We arrived at Nautical Day at Blacks Creek and she immediately caught us an eel for the touch tank. Jayda's unbeatable and energetic smile and disposition were inspirations for me this summer. Thanks for teaching me so much,  to all of my brilliant JPAs!

As I reflect on the rest of the summer, what I remember most are smiles and sunshine. I'll always be grateful to Save the Harbor for giving me this amazing opportunity. For letting me work with Ahmed, our expert LHE, when I was nervous on my first day; for having an on-call pirate and a president who enjoys listening to sea tales with kids; for Bridget Ryan, our incredible Head Teacher.

Thanks for an amazing summer, Boston!

Crabs > Skate

It surely has been an epic week for the crew over at Save the Harbor. The highlight of my week would probably have to be watching Little T, from St. Marks, catch a skate off the dock. This was the first big catch after many bites over the course of the summer. Despite the skate being the biggest Spectacle moment all summer, another particularly small part of my week was highly memorable. This would definitely have to be watching one of my campers catch a crab using one of our ugly sticks. This was legit.

Mini caught a crab!
Excitement all around for the squad!
For the first time in five years I led fishing this past Tuesday on All Access Boston Harbor. The bait used to catch this small green crab was a squid. Interestingly enough most of the squid was gone and the crab was latched onto a fairly minor part of our intended bait. Mini was part of one of the last groups to attend my fishing clinic, it feels awesome to say that, and achieve this great accomplishment. It was about 2 p.m and most would normally understand that the day is over at this point but Mini put up a a good bargain. Her words were simply "Can i fish for crabs?" That's all she had to say to win me over.

One cast...... BAM, a crab. God written or luck? The world may never know (No, this isn't a tootsie pop advertisement). This was very fun for all of us on AABH to see and a great end for our first day out on the island this week.

Until next time,

Ahmed Hassan

Peaking Choggie

Choggie!
It felt good to go back to the Boston Children Museum this past monday. No, there were not familiar faces but there were many groups consisting of tourist, commuters, and visitors of the museum who were interested in what we do. Surprisingly enough after our first cast we landed a Choggie. We collectively have been on a role this summer! Identifying  a new fish is not the easiest thing to do but with the help of Mike and our reference book we were able to provide the right name to the children and their families.

The ever so "scary" spider crab
Numerically two comes after three and so on. This was exactly what continued to happen. By noon we had successfully caught four Choggies with the help of some awesome kids. Great success.

Our catch report for Monday was fairly impressive. It offered a wide variety. The highlight of my day  definitely would have had to been watching the children play with the touch tank using a dip net to pick up the crabs. Many of the children were frightened of the spider crabs but after explaining to them that if interacted with appropriately they can be harmless: they opened up to us. It always awesome watching our children overcome their fears. Especially when some adults are so reluctant to interacting with our touch tank even after their children have help numerous sea creatures.

Its been an awesome start to the week and am looking forward to our next few days!

Miss Peddocks

Unfortunately this is not a blog about the boat Miss Peddocks, if you were anticipating that my apologies.

Ladies and Gents this is a blog about the wonderful, Peddocks Island.

Personally I have had an amazing time on Peddocks in previous years. I've met Governor Deval Patrick and have hosted thousands of children on our FREE All Access Boston Harbor experience.

Nice to meet again, Tobin Sports Club!
Being our first week out we have accomplished many things on Peddocks. We welcomed our favorite fisherman Sam Schrieber back, landed a few skate, and thrived in a heat wave. Sounds like a lot, right? Wrong. We pride ourselves in our work and once we accomplish one thing we do not like to settle, we dream bigger and work towards the bigger goal. Especially when were catching spider crabs on our rods that are almost a foot in diameter!

Peddocks' beach is also a favorite of many groups. On All Access we cycle islands first Spectacle, George's, Spectacle, then Peddocks. Already we have seen groups like Mission Safe, Revere Rec, and many others return this week for Peddocks. They all enjoy many parts of the island but love the beach the most. Despite being slightly smaller my belief is that they enjoy the slight current that flows through the beach. Or maybe the smooth rocks that can be skipped if the group cannot swim due to their organizations ruling. (We still advise everyone to atleast get their feet wet) Despite spectacle offering equal the amount of opportunity with a shorter commute, Peddocks is still a fan favorite.

Its been a great week, from BCM to AABH, from kickball to swimming, from smiles to excitement. This week could not have went any better.

Talk to you soon,

Ahmed Hassan

Advantageous

A well picked team if i do say so myself
The best part about winning sometimes is not the victory but the path to glory. Despite my kickball teams continuous victory no matter the site placement.

As stated in previous blogs we, the save the harbor crew, pride ourselves in the work we do. Hey, sometimes I may awake annoyed due to my alarms ignorant blaring at seven in the morning to get me up but at the same time that frown turns upside down shortly after remembrance of the endless possibilities the day may hold for us.

Safety First
Blacks Creek is a blast this year. The key has been many of the returning campers. Some of the newer campers become excited when they see how happy the returners are and instantly become wrapped up in whatever the group is doing. We have even received many "Thank You's" and "What are you'll doing different this year" alongside many uplifting smiles. Truthfully, I do my job in one manner, lead. Whether its by example or teaching my goal is to improve the quality of our children's daily life. But as I teach and lead I am also learning. For example, Nate has taught that you can go knee deep into the water and still come out and play kickball as if nothing had happened. (Despite getting a cut after sliding he still went home happy!) Or even simply learning that when a child does not want to do something with the group giving them that one on one attention is better than letting them do whatever they'd like.

These little parts of our day have been very advantageous towards the enormous progression seen in our summer. Becoming enlightened by more than the suns super hot rays we are growing. August is around the corner and we shall try to do more, not settle for augustitis, and be better. On AABH we have a saying I believe it goes "No Gum, No Running, No Jumping", but at our other sites I like to implement "Safety and Leadership First, Everything else second".

Until Next Time

Creek Side, The New Inititative

On our way to meet Iron Boot!
Rules!
This year we are seeing rapid growth in our Quincy location, Blacks Creek. We can accredit that to numerous things but I like to believe it was part of having a quincy native, Danny O'Hara, working with us. Maybe even Carolyn's impeccable warm-up games but we cannot give her too much credit too early (Your Awesome, Carolyn.) Who knows, the point is the numbers are growing exponentially. We started off our first day of programming with nineteen children and the numbers have seen heights like never before. All these numbers just get me excited for our infamous Save the Harbor kickball games.

Creativity
After our early monday rules ritual, an awesome new initiative part of our mornings thanks to Carolyn, we sought after the waters of Quincy. A few of the girls, Jocelyn, Mary-Kate, and more created their own little ecosystems. They created a colosseum styled environment where they captured species of their interests and relocated them to their own aquarium. It was amazing to watch their creativity first hand and the level of teamwork each omitted. They respectfully recreated a replica of what they saw as the "original" environment and even gave some of the hermit crabs cool names. Unfortunately "Smitty" was not one. I was hoping they would name the hermit crab smitty, thats a cool name. Shortly after our snacktime I led the children up the hill and introduced them to a good friend of mine. His name is Iron Boot.

Iron Boot is a three year all access kickball phenom, you'll hear more about him later in the week!

Until next time!

First week in Quincy

Hello friends!

At the end of my first week at Blacks Creek in Quincy,  I have many memorable moments to share! To start, here we are on our very first day, representing Save the Harbor/Save the Bay! I felt so lucky to have my team ready to go, especially with extra help from Ahmed, who is returning for his fifth summer, and certainly knows the ropes!
Go team! Daynaja took the photo, I'm here with Ahmed, Danny and Abdi in the blue shirts.

If you were wondering where the adventure starts, for a lot of kids, it is right here- reaching over the side of a bucket. Especially for timid kids, being able to crouch next to a pal to touch a crab or some minnows is an opportunity to break the ice.  I learned this week that all of the kids find a way to share these moments of awe with others. Sometimes they shout "yuck!" or "cool!" or  "can we eat it?" or "can I name him Frederick?" But, other times, they just quietly ask us what the animals do, or what they're made of. Once they reach into the bucket, they've broken the surface tension, and wonder begins to spread!

Playing with minnows and crabs

We even have some campers using their own touch tanks, filling them with shrimp, minnows, crabs and seaweed!
I am in blue in the background clasping my hands to my face, wishing I had my own personal touch-tank to bring to Blacks Creek, of course! Lots of cool seaweed in this tank!

We usually play sports in the afternoon, and some kids get tired of kickball, or simply don't want to play. We take a group of these kids into the shade and bring pens, paper, and our guidebook. This week, we found moon jellyfish in the book and in the water, so we started talking about things we may not have seen yet, but that live in Boston's harbor. We looked up creatures in the guidebook and decided to combine them into sea monsters! One girl put a starfish on the body of four green crabs and named it a "crabfish." Below is the creation process from beginning to end!
Step 1: Find a buddy, a notepad, and the guidebook. Talk about what you saw in the water, what you could have seen in the water, and what sea monster or combination of species you wish were real. Use extra imagination!
Step 2: Celebrate! Here are two of our adventurers, brother and sister, posing together after drawing their favorite creatures from the guidebook. Celebrating with a sibling is always fun!
Step 3: Tah-dah! You now have a masterpiece. This is the one featured above with the artist, and it has kelp, squid, hermit crabs, razor clams and a big, scary, lion's mane jellyfish on it!

That's it for this week, I'm looking forward to drawing more sea monsters next week! I think the crab trap will provide ample inspiration for future artwork!

Blacks Creek Where Dreams Come True

At the end of every parking lot...... there's a gate.... that leads off road,,,,,,,to Blacks Creek!
Great Success

Oh man, I have missed this place dearly. Some in the office may remember my dramatic attempt at saving a kickball in this murky water. Some may remember our intense games of kickball on the diamond. Most may remember little Tommy's smile when he finds a horseshoe crab rather than a green crab. Despite differences, Blacks Creek is home to some remarkable, talented, amazing young kids. I've worked this site in the past with some former colleagues Conor Newman, and Tom Rebula. Every year has been a great new experience.

Carolyn being awesome during sign-in
I kickstarted this years programming bright and early Monday morning with Carolyn, a new SHE, and a few JPAs. Carolyn was very enthusiastic about working at Blacks Creek and starting off the summer. Unfortunately, Blacks Creek is one of our smaller sites we work at. Despite its size, the kids still have a blast everytime we meet with them and they enjoy our free summer programming also. There some familiar faces and many new faces. Everyone fit well in our small family there.

During the sign-in period I had the opportunity to meet with many of the children's parents and had the oppurtunity to express our game plan for the summer. All the parents are onboard with our intentions for the summer and gave us some very positive insight on what they may want for their children during the summer. Hey, I mean after all we are a business, so lets get business done!

Its going to be an exciting week!

Duty Calls..... Time to Return Home

Circa April 15',  Im the tallest in the picture! (Thats a norm for me)
Hey, Guys! My name, if you did not know, is Ahmed Hassan. This is my fifth summer with the infamous Save The Harbor Save the Bay. A little about myself, I recently turned twenty years old (I'm very old), I am a rising junior at Stonehill College, and also the 2014 Boston Harbor Hero! I look at every summer, since my first year, as an opportunity to give back to the city of Boston that does so much for us that we may sometimes look past. I carry a lot of pride in the work our company does for the water quality of the many cities and towns of Mass, and also the children of the urban communities of Boston we serve. I am an eight year resident of South Boston. My neighborhood, West Broadway Homes, is less than two miles from our Fish Pier office, hence why I call my job my second home and not work. It's always a great pleasure to return to Save the Harbor.

During our first week of work we held a full staff orientation, it was such a great time. While learning all the new faces and trying to remember all the new names I found myself stuck. Being the oldest of eight you'd think I could remember names with leisure. This was not the case. I found myself constantly looking to my left and my right to find the "regulars." You know, Bridget, Amy, Kelly, and so forth. But, due to the fact that I am a veteran, I reached out to the few that may feel a little tense during orientation periods. When we went to Georges Island, with the help of John, an SHE, we instructed our crew on the basics of fishing. I believe spiderman says "with great power comes great responsibility" and with this power instead of calling on people who knew how to fish I volunteered the new comers. The outcome was great!

I couldn't be anymore excited for this summer, or could I? We'll just have to wait and find out!

Catch you later!

-Ahmed M. Hassan
