Spectacular Day

I am looking at the map of Spectacle Island.

Hello, everyone. My name is Hung Huynh. I had a great summer at Save The Harbor/Save The Bay this year as a Junior Program Assistant. Yesterday I went to work for Save The Harbor/Save The Bay to help out on the trip to Spectacle Island.

It was a little bit chilly outside when I came to the boat at 9 o'clock, I met my co-workers. We had to wait for the guests. The boat left at 10 o'clock. There were about 300 people on the boat. While the boat was leaving, I talked to the guests about the Harbor.

When we got onto Spectacle Island, we walked around the island. The guests took pictures on the island as we walked on the beach and to to the top of the island. A few children found marbles - and everybody had a good time, including me!

Two children found marbles.
We had lunch at 12 o'clock. After lunch we walked around the island again. We went back to the mainland at 2 o'clock. It was a great day. I am looking forward to working for Save the Harbor next summer. I hope to see you all then.

The best sculptures EVER !!!

When I first got to Revere Beach I was really excited and did not know what to expect. At first everything was just so interesting and really cool to see. There was music playing, people performing, samples of different types of food being given away and many different trucks selling food. At first I had to talk about the lobster in the touch tank and had to tell everyone that came by some interesting facts about the lobster. The trick question about the lobster was what color is a lobster's blood? Everyone that we asked said yellow or blue, but the lobster's blood is transparent. Whenever we told them that they always said, "wow" because they all thought that the blood was an actual color.

After I was done talking about the touch tank I went to see all the sculptures that were being built. When I saw the sculpture I was like " OH MY GOD these are beautiful". There were a lot of them and they were all unique in their own way. The most interesting one was the Boston Strong sculpture. It was showing respect to all the people that got injured in the bombing at the Boston Marathon. I found it really nice because they really put a lot of work into the sculpture It was a lot of fun working on this day I hope there are more interesting events to come.

Flash before my eyes!

Working At The Boston Children's Museum

Today i caught the first fish at the children's museum. I was so excited to catch my first fish this summer i was starting to loose hope 3 weeks in . The fish i caught today was a small herring about maybe 4-5 inches long . My two co-workers Karrisha and Hung also had some luck out there today too each pulling in a catch for themselves. All together we had 15-20 crabs and 3 fish.
So far i love working at the children's museum this summer. Everyday we have something for the kids and their parents to come look at. Its always a great feeling to teach a kid who's never been fishing before how to fish. Overall had a great day today and hoping to catch some more fish tomorrow!

An Easy Day

Showing children a crab
Yesterday at the Children's Museum, it was a slow day. We started to take the fishing rods, baits, traps, and some stuff for fishing and crabbing. We used a big fish as baits. Iris cut a fish into many pieces. While she was cutting, suddenly the knife broke, because the fish was frozen. She used the other knife to cut a fish. We put bait onto the fishing rods, we put traps under ocean.

We got only one fish. We caught three crabs and a fish the first time. We showed the crabs and fish to children, and we showed children how to hold the crabs with their hands. We told them which crab is a male and which crab is a female. We had a break for 30 minutes. After that, we caught six crabs in a trap. So many children came to see the crabs, and they asked us a lot of questions. Some of the children were fishing. At the end of the day, we threw all the crabs back into the ocean.

Fun In the Sun At Frisbeach

This week with temperatures hitting the 90s it made for a great week to head over to Spectacle Island. I have never been to Spectacle Island so I was looking forward to a great week of fun in the sun and of course Frisbeach. On Tuesday, alongside Carolyn, Bridget, Manny DeJesus, and Kiauna, I decided to play a game of kickball with Paige Academy. After only about fifteen minutes or so, we decided we had enough of the heat and it was time to head to the water and join the rest of our staff.  That was the right decision because it surely cooled us off.
The All Access crew escaping the heat and cooling off in the water

Today after hearing it was supposed to be the hottest day of the week, I decided to take Frisbeach to the water. When we arrived at Spectacle Island,  we ate our lunch and then headed off to the water to play some frisbees. I started off Frisbeach with help from Thi, Carolyn, Hung, and Karrisha.
Teaching a girl from the Jordan's Boys and Girls club how to throw a frisbee.
We started playing with the new Save the Harbor frisbees with Winthrop Park and Recreation, Jordan's Boys and Girls Club, and with East Boston YMCA. We provided each group with Save the Harbor frisbees. Now Frisbeach will go with them back to their summer programs. Looking forward to more
fun in the sun at Frisbeach!

The first day I went to work

I am playing soccer with one of the children from the Idiil group.
Hi, everyone. I am Hung and I am going to be a senior at Madison Park High School this September. Today was my first day working at Save The Harbor/Save The Bay. I gave the children from the Idiil group a picture to draw and I talked to them about what we were going to do today. We visited George's Island; we boarded on the boat, talked to each other.  Some children looked at the sea, while some were playing around. We arrived to George's Island, got off the boat and had lunch.

We went to the field to play soccer and kickball. I played soccer with many of the kids. We also went to the tunnel; the tunnel is a cave and it is very dark inside.  I hit the wall in the tunnel while trying to walk through. I walked around the island and noticed that it was small but it is beautiful. I met new friends and I talked to so many children.

Today was my first day at the island. I felt excited and am enjoying these experiences I am getting in my job.

I can't wait to work tomorrow!

I will have a great summer with the children!
