First Summer at Save the Harbor

 Hello!

My name is Marley Iralien (pronouns she/her) and I am a senior at Boston Latin Academy. I love music and have even attempted to teach myself several instruments (piano and guitar). I'm not very good at any of the instruments but it's fun to try. Some of my favorite artists right now are SZA, Cocteau Twins, and Pink Floyd. In my free time I also read a lot. During COVID I started trying to learn two languages. I took French in school and so I've been working on improving it, but I’m also trying to learn Yiddish because it is the language of my great-grandparents. I really want to become a polyglot in the future.

In college I plan to study Environmental Science and I am hoping that Save the Harbor provides a bit of insight and hands-on experience for me. I’m excited for this summer not only because I can learn more but because of the opportunity to meet and get to know new people.

My first week was along the Harborwalk. We walked around Long Wharf, the North End, and the Seaport district. It was fun to explore each location and learn its history. I liked our focus for this week on sea level rise and its impact on surrounding communities. I thought the process of coming up with solutions was an interesting mental exercise, though it proved to be harder than I thought it would be. Although I was not shocked to learn how sea level rise will affect Boston residents, I was annoyed by the lack of work done to prevent it. I was also confused by the amount of new and expensive buildings in the Seaport district because they seem at risk of being destroyed.

Overall I had a good week and I’m excited to see what the rest of the summer holds!
