Week 2 - South Boston

This week, my team and I went to South Boston to explore the idea of beach accessibility. Prior to this exploration, frankly, I never really thought about beach accessibility mainly because I never had problems going to Carson Beach or Castle Island. Of course there is occasional traffic here and there, otherwise having easy access to these areas is a privilege I have and recognize. We discussed factors Castle Island and Carson Beach that were accessible and inaccessible such as transportation, parking space, location, the presence of ramps or other means of assistance for the elderly and disabled, etc. In addition, our group discussed the factor of safety for accessibility. For example, some people might not feel safe about being in these public spaces because of their gender, sexual orientation, race or identity. With this in mind, we decided to create a survey, including QR codes, that people can take so that we can collect data on who uses these public spaces and their backgrounds. We asked them about their likes and dislikes about the area, how they want it to be changed and demographics. Ultimately, we hope that the data we collect will be the first step towards making the Boston's public spaces more accessible to people of all backgrounds.

One of the most memorable parts of this week was when our group played UNO. It has been quite a while since I have played. Our group was clearly very competitive which made it even more fun. All in all, it was an eventful and productive week. I can't wait to go to next week's site!
