Casting a Line into Summer 2018

Hi, my name is Michael Dello Russo and I am very excited to begin my summer with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay!

First striped bass on a fly

I was brought up in Revere, Massachusetts to a family that was deeply intertwined with the ocean. My family comes from Sicilian heritage, so I was raised around fish and fishing. Some of my first memories are joining my dad and brothers on cold autumn nights to catch smelt for the seven fishes tradition on Christmas Eve. With a former marine biologist as a father, I was inundated with a wealth of knowledge about our coastlines and the organisms that live there. Through my upbringing, I developed a love for nature and try to involve myself in it as much as I can.

I am currently a student at Northeastern University going into my second year this fall. I am studying environmental science with a concentration in conservation and with my degree, I hope to help protect and restore at risk ecosystems. Outside of academics, I consider myself an avid bird watcher and fly fisherman. I am also an aspiring nature photographer, hoping to capture a fraction of the beauty of wild things in my images. Another one of my passions is passing on my experiences to the younger generation so they can foster the same love I have for the environment.

I still have a lot to learn, and the others working at Save the Harbor/Save the Bay will be key in teaching me. I can’t wait to get started, and I hope some of the tools in my toolbox will be useful this summer!

Let's get this summer started!

-Michael
