Excited for my first year!

Hi everyone! My name is Lauren McNair, and today is the end of my first week as a Save the Bay/ Save the Harbor employee.  I'm a rising high school senior and I enjoy learning about ecosystems and climate change.  Some of my hobbies include cooking, playing chess, and writing. I also love running cross-country and track.  I'm so excited to have new adventures this summer with Save the Bay/Save the Harbor!

This week was the best one of my summer so far.  On Wednesday, our group went out to Spectacle Island with family and community groups. I'm a part of one of the All Access groups, and each day we teach kids about the wildlife in the harbor and on the harbor islands, or about fishing.  On Wednesday, I learned all about Green Crabs. Now I know how to pick up a crab, how to tell the difference between a male and female crab, and that Green Crabs in the Boston harbor are an invasive species.

On Thursday, the All Access groups went to George's Island! Thursday was my first time on George's Island, and I was so excited to be there! We were lucky enough to go on a guided tour of the island given by David, and now I know all about the weaponry and prison that was on George's Island hundreds of years ago.  I was amazed that most of the fort was open to the public, and walking around inside of it was an awesome experience. We also walked along the wall of the fort, and got a view of the entire Boston harbor!

Overall, this week was so fun and educational.  I am so glad to have such a wonderful opportunity to explore the city of Boston and the harbor with Save the Bay, and I had a great time these past two days. I can't wait for Monday!
