Tie dye and plankton nets

Usually every Tuesday or Wednesday Nikita will talk to the kids about littering and how long different things take to decompose and why it is bad for people to dump things in the harbor. Every time she asks the kids if they know the 3 R's: reduce, reuse and recycle. Nikita thought of the really cool way of demonstrating the 3 R's with the fun activity of making plankton nets. We split the kids up unto groups of four and they all worked together to make the nets; it did take forever but they were really excited to use them. Once they were made, Nikita explained to them that we reused almost all the materials that were needed for the nets. Also after the trash talks we have with the kids, almost all of them wanted to help clean up the harbor when we are in the kayaks.

So on Friday we wanted to try something new with the kids and we thought of tie dye because kids love that. It was almost all of our first time doing tie dye so it took a while to figure it out but it was really fun. Tie dying is definitely an addicting activity, after doing over twenty shirts on Friday I feel like I am a professional at tie dying and I want to tie dye every piece of white clothing I own. I think we should do it again probably with our last group of the summer since they kids loved it so much on Friday. It also depends the group of kids since we get new kids every week. I guess I'll just have to wait to see what happens later in the summer. Last week was just really fun and full of adventures.

Until next time,
Esmeralda
